Hello all,
The front page of today's Baltimore Sun announces Governor O'Malley's proposal to shift some of the cost of teacher pension from the state to the local jurisdiction. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/bs-md-omalley-budget-2-20120116,0,5340585.story
This means Baltimore City would be responsible for paying a portion of our teacher pensions. This would most likely mean that the City passes the costs along to Baltimore City Public Schools by reducing City contributions in other areas such as salaries and school construction.
We have also heard that O'Malley does not intend to maintain the inflation factor, despite our calls to maintain it. Click below to read the letter that Mrs. Cole, JoAnne Huey and I sent to him on behalf of our school. http://rolandparkpublic.org/advocacy/letter-to-governor-omalley/
Both of these proposals are unacceptable. Our school and schools across the city faced very challenging budget cuts last year. We can't let our children and teachers suffer further cuts this year.
The Baltimore Education Coalition is having a legislative forum on Thursday, February 2nd from 6-7:30 pm (dinner from 5:15-6) at Digital Harbor High School. 1100 Covington Street, near Key Highway. Please come to learn more about the governor's proposed state funding plan and actions we need to take.
