Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes International Week, a special week for our students to appreciate international dance, song, displays, costumes, food and more! During the week of March 22, each grade will visit the multipurpose room to check out the displays, enjoy a performance, and sample international food. As you can imagine, we need the help of many parents to make this event a success. Following is a lot of information, but please read on to see how you can be involved:
All children attired in ethnic clothing on the day of their IW visit will have an opportunity to walk across the stage for a fashion show. What a fun way to show your cultural pride!
Lend international clothing for teachers and staff to wear during international week. If you would rather your clothing not be worn, it can be lent for display. Please contact Betsy Huttar at ejh@nholaw.com if you have clothing to lend.
Lend international objects or artifacts for display in the multipurpose room. Please be advised that the tables are not staffed, and items will be left unattended, so nothing irreplaceable please! Please contact Betsy Huttar at ejh@nholaw.com if you have any interesting objects to lend.
Contribute a global dish or snack for students to sample at one of the nine tasting sessions. Homemade is wonderful, but store-bought goodies are great too. All children in attendance will receive at least three “bites” of international cuisine. It would be great if the food donation could be approximately 100 “bites.” We need lots of goodies so every child can taste several interesting items! The food does not have to be elaborate – it could be 100 olives, or a special family recipe, whatever works best for you! E-mail Katy Couch at katy@katycouch.com to help out with food.
Help create table displays. Each grade will have a display, and if you have a particular interest in a region, or a particular interest in a grade, please consider helping to create the table displays. Contact JoAnne Huey at hueyjoanne@yahoo.com to volunteer to work with the teachers and students on the table displays.
Share your talent at one of our nine performances. Singers, dancers and musicians are needed – it’s the highlight of the week to see all the talent in our school community. Please contact Mrs. Grizzard at cgrizzard@earthlink.net if you are interested in performing.
Other talents? Children love to see their name in Chinese or Arabic, or another beautiful written language. You can volunteer to demonstrate a skill for a session or two, and interact with the students. Please e-mail Christine Fischel at volunteercoordinator@rolandparkpublic.org if you have a special talent to share.
Do you have interesting international experiences to share? Are you knowledgeable about another culture? Speakers are also featured at each session, so if you would like give a 10 minute presentation, it would enhance the educational experience for the children. Remember the students range from kindergarten to eighth grade, so please let us know what age range you prefer. Please e-mail Christine Fischel at volunteercoordinator@rolandparkpublic.org if you are interested in speaking.
Daytime availability? We need volunteers the week of March 22. Shifts are from 8-11:30 and 11:30-3 daily. Other times may be accommodated. Please consider spending a few hours with us, it’s a great way to participate in the arts life of our wonderful school. Please e-mail Christine Fischel at volunteercoordinator@rolandparkpublic.org if you are interested in volunteering for a shift. We also need set-up assistance Friday, March 19, and break-down assistance the afternoon of Friday, March 26.
If you have an interest in doing something on a smaller scale, please contact your child’s teacher to see if they are interested in a classroom presentation.
Do you think outside the box? Please share your ideas with us! Please contact Mrs. Grizzard, Arts Integration Specialist and event coordinator at cgrizzard@earthlink.net.
We are looking forward to your participation to make this week a huge success for our children. Thank you for taking the time to consider how you will be involved!
